Gum Graft (Connective Tissue Graft)

The connective tissue graft is a straightforward procedure.  Gum graft surgery is typically recommended when patients experience an exposed tooth root as a result of gum recession. Gum graft surgery is a procedure that helps to repair the defect and prevent additional recession and bone loss. 

Connective tissue grafts are used to cover roots where the gums are absent due to excessive gingival recession. During gum graft surgery we will take gum tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed root. We can use pre-packaged graft material as well so tat the roof of your mouth does not have to be disturbed. The tissue can be used for one tooth or several teeth to even your gum line and reduce sensitivity. A gum graft helps to protect your teeth from the damaging effects of gum recession, or patients can utilize the gum graft surgery for more cosmetic uses to change appearance of their smile.

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the tissue that surrounds the teeth pulls away from an individual tooth, but can also affect multiple teeth at once, exposing the tooth's root causing damage to the supporting bone. Although gum recession affects many people, it's something most people don't notice because it's a gradual process. Over time, the exposed tooth root can cause tooth sensitivity, especially when eating cold or hot foods. If gum recession is not treated it can result in tooth loss.

Recovery From Gum Tissue Graft

Once the procedure has been completed you will be able to go home. We offer sedation to help you relax. We advise that our patients make prior arrangements with someone or a driving service to get them home. Most patients have minimal discomfort post-operatively and are able to return to work the next day. As cases may vary patient to patient will provide specific instructions to ensure a speedy recovery.
