Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and root planing (Deep Cleaning) is a treatment to help prevent gum disease from becoming a severe problem. Having this process done allows for cleaning between your gums and teeth all the way to the bottom of the pocket. The procedure may require freezing (local anesthetic) to numb your gums and the teeth. Our dental hygienists use ultrasonic instruments to conduct the procedure. Ultrasonic instruments are typically found to be more comfortable than traditional scraping methods.

What To Expect After Treatment

When we are required to use anesthesia, you may find that your lips and gums might remain numb for a few hours. The scaling and root planing treatment typically causes little or no discomfort.

Why should you get this treatment?

You should consider requesting scaling and root planing when your gums have either started to pull away from the teeth or the roots of the teeth have hard mineral deposits (calculus).

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE TREATMENT?

With proper maintenance of your teeth good dental care after the procedure, the progression of gum disease should stop. And your gums will heal and become firm and pink again.

What are the Risks?

If you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe infection you may need to take antibiotics before and/or after your surgery as this treatment might be particularly dangerous for you. You may require antibiotics, if you:

1. Are affected by certain heart problems that increase risk to heart infection called endocarditis.

2. Have a weak immune system.

3. Recently has a major surgery, or have artificial body parts, such as an hip(s) or heart valve(s).

What you should consider before root planing and scaling treatment:

Although this is a simple procedure, root planing and scaling is an effective method to stop gum disease. You must maintain your teeth with regular oral care such as brushing and flossing regularly after the procedure. If you fail to properly maintain your regular dental care, your gum disease has a higher chance of progressing.

If you use tobacco products, we always recommend to stop all use to promote healing. The use of tobacco products such as cigarettes or chewing tobacco reduces your ability to fight infection and prolongs healing.

Proper daily oral home care is essential to preventing periodontal disease. Even after treatment for periodontal disease, proper home care is required to maintain your oral health.
