Sinus Augmentation

Sinus augmentation can help create more room for implants in the back of the upper arch. A major consideration to implant success is the quality and the amount of bone where the implants are planned to placed. Generally, it is more difficult to successfully implement dental implants into the upper back jaw due to the lack of bone, the quality, and due to how close it is to the sinus.

There are different techniques that can be used to raise the sinus and assist in the growth of new bone. A small window is gently created and the sinus is delicately lifted. A calcium graft is then inserted to fill the space.

The development of the graft can take 3-9 months before implants can be inserted. After the bone has developed and the implants have been put in place, further time to heal is required. Often, the implant can be inserted at the same time as the sinus augmentation, saving 3-6 months of healing time.

Those who undergo sinus augmentation experience minimal discomfort during this procedure. Majority of people are able to return to work the following day.
